Sunday, May 10, 2009 between 9:00 am to 12:30 pm. Chellah II Room.

Abstract:

The internet today allows people to connect, socialize, collaborate, publish, conduct business, entertain themselves, perform complex tasks, receive advise, learn, communicate and more. It is hard to imagine how we survived in the pre-internet age and we credit the host of technologies that are associated with the internet with an improved quality of life and productivity.

In this tutorial I will describe some of the technologies that are associated with these trends, will give an overview, demos and speculate on where this revolution is going.

We will discuss data and application integration using web resources, we will talk about examples of crowd sourcing in different domains. We will discuss why connectivity has replaced convergence. We will also talk about innovations in search engines, information retrieval and extremely large databases and applications that are accessed and created on the fly (pay –as-you-go and on-the- fly- integration models). We will provide examples from open source software and we will give example using Cloud computing, Hadoop, BigTable etc. It will be clear at the end of the presentations what is meant by Web 1.0, Web 2.0, Web 3.0 and the Semantic Web. We will explore buzz words, fads and lasting innovations.
