Persistent Betti Numbers in Melanoma Detection

The distinction between naevus and melanoma is a tricky one, since there don't exist true templates of the two types of melanocytic lesion. One major issue is asymmetry: we explore the possibility of detecting qualitative asymmetry in a quantitave way, by comparing the two halves of a lesion image through distance of Persistent Betti Numbers with respect to a 2D filtering function. We compare this method with a similar but 1-dimensional one used previously.
