The City

Alicante is a city with history. The first settlement is believed to have been an Iberian settlement on the slope of Mount Benacantil, although the first urban center dates back to the 4th century BC. with the Ibero-Roman colony of Lucentum that can be visited today. Vila Vella moves to the slope of Mount Benacantil for defensive reasons during the Arab conquest and changes its name to LAQANT in 713 when it passes into Muslim hands.
In 1247 during the reconquest it would become known as Vila Nova and 2 years later Jaime II incorporated the town of Alicante to the Kingdom of Valencia although it would not be a city until 2 centuries later.
During the nineteenth century the city grew and modernized with a new urban planning that removes the walls and creates new neighborhoods thanks to the arrival of the railway and the inauguration of the lighting.
