Dr. Elena Mª Talero Barrientos is Senior Lecturer of Pharmacology in Pharmacology Department at the University of Seville (Spain) since 2011. She got her PhD degree in Pharmacology with European Mention in 2009 at the same university. Her thesis focused on the role of gastrointestinal peptides in inflammatory bowel disease, especially as these molecules have emerged as potential immuno-regulatory and anti-inflammatory agents. During this time, she had a short-stay at the Cellular, Molecular, and Developmental Neurobiology Department, Instituto Cajal (Madrid), for 5 months as well as at the Division of Pre-clinical Oncology, School of Medical and Surgical Sciences, University of Nottingham, United Kingdom, for 3 months. In 2011, she worked as a postdoc on several different projects at Bristol University (United Kingdom) for 6 months. Her topic of research was the study of cancer stem cells markers, such as Bmi-1 and Lgr5 in colorectal tumorigenesis.
Currently, she supervises several PhD students and continues working on intestinal bowel disease and associated-colon cancer as well as in skin inflammatory disorders including psoriasis and UV-induced damage. Our challenge is finding drugs, nutraceuticals, or ingredients of functional foods that help to treat inflammatory diseases with a special emphasis in natural products.
