The City of Seville

Seville, geographical settled where the two superpowers of antiquity, Rome and Carthage were measured; where Trajan, Hadrian and Theodosius emperors were born, was the city where Jews, Muslims and Christians have converged and where their miscegenation left a profound impression in the civil and religious architecture that we can today admire in its streets and squares.

The discovery of America became the most important historical event for Seville and the river Guadalquivir, the only authorized river by the Spanish Crown to improve the commerce with the Latin port, establishing a close relationship with the history of the Americas that will be recorded in the General Archive of the Indies, one of three buildings listed as World Heritage City.

In the General Archive of the Indies original documents of incalculable value telling the history of the American continent are kept, like the relations as Christopher Columbus and the Catholic Monarchs, the testament of Juan Sebastian El Cano, papal bulls, the writings of the explorers, and most importantly, the bilateral Treaty of Tordesillas, that is to say, the document showing the division of the world established between Spain and Portugal.

This document was inscribed by UNESCO in the Register of the Memory of the World. Seville, which over time would diminish its hegemony having no capacity to handle the increasingly large ships passing by the Guadalquivir, replaced the riches brought from America in the form of mercantilism by the cultural richness of which today boasts.

It was the cradle of Velázquez and Murillo, Bécquer, Machado, Cernuda, Aleixandre and, locked in his prison, Cervantes began his masterpiece of world literature, Don Quixote.

Seville was also musical scenery of great composers for wonderful operas like Carmen, by Bizet; Las Bodas de Figaro, by Mozart; Fidelio, by Beethoven; or El Barbero de Sevilla, by Rossini.

In addition to the cultural wealth of Seville , the two most important weeks in the city it must be added: Semana Santa and Feria.

Seville has become part of the great cities being headquarters of important Exhibitions, like the Latin American, which has left an important architectural heritage, and the Universal Exhibitions of 1992, which would modernize the city.

Seville keeps on growing and improving its cultural offer, strengthen it as a touristic attraction. For these reasons from the organizing committee of the III CICSE, we invite you not only to participate in the Congress, but also to enjoy the city and its cultural and touristic offer.
